Basant Panchami : Beginning of Holi Celebrations in Mathura

On the Panchami of Magh Shukla Paksha ( fifth day of second fortnight of Magh month as per hindu calendar ) Basant Panchami ( Also known as Vasant Panchami ) is celebrated across the country for various reasons. In Braj Mandal ( Mathura, Vrindavan, Gokul, Goverdhan,Nandgaon & Barsana ) it is celebrated for three different reason.

  • Birthday of Godess Saraswati ( Godess of Knowledge ) : In all religious, spiritual & other education institutes . Special prayer to Godess is offered to seek her blessing for gaining knowledge. Priest and devotees were yellow attires since it favorite color of her. 
  • Starting of Holi Festivities : In Mathura, dig up holes and install Holi Danda ( Wooden Stick ) to mark the arrival of Basant ritu ( Spring season ) and starting of holi festivities for the next 51 days.Temple of Mathura & Vrindavn during this day are decorated with yellow and kesar flowers. In Sri Banke Bihari Temple of Vrindavan priest start holi celebrations by tossing abeer and gulal ( rose powder ) on devotees during prayer. In Sri Dwarikadhish temple Mathura pilgrims after taking holy dip in Yamuna river apply chandan ( Sandalwood powder paste ) on their forehead.
  • Madanostav : Day of Basant Panchami is celebrated as madnostav ( festival of Kamdev ). Kamdev in Hindu culture is considered God of Love ), the madnostav begins with music, dance, prayers.
Basant Panchmi in Mathura will be celebrated on 24  January 2015,Saturday.
